Another one from the Luxe stable now being imported exclusively through backpackinglight.co.uk and once again offering excellent value for money v weight v performance.
At first glance there are similarities between the Lightwave, the Terra Nova Competition and Vaude Power Lizard.
As it shares the same footprint as the Power Lizard, it is larger than the Competition and offers plenty of space for the solo backpacker. Like the Power Lizard, it has enough room for 2 adults. Big enough for adventure racing and fastpacking, but maybe a little too cramped for a long holiday.
It depends on how close you are!
Unlike the Power Lizard, it does have two top vents for extra ventilation and larger end vents to keep condensation to a minimum.
Whereas the Power Lizard weighs 1kg the Lightwave is fractionally heavier at 1.27kg. However it is also a third of the price!
What’s it like for porch space at head and foot ends, between inner and outer? There’s quite a bit of usable space there on my old Laserlite which I often use.
At the head and the foot end are the narrow point of the triangle, so storage is limited. Hopefully the video and the photos on the product page indicate this clearly. http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/product579.asp?PageID=1
What’s it like in a really heavy Cumbrian deluge, if the H.Head is only 2000?
It handles a big storm well. Listen to the Christmas podcast and hear how it copes with 60mph winds!
What’s it like in winter? My friend has the power lizard, and it’s mesh inner is still cold in chilly winds. Does the lightwave have a mesh inner?
Yes Carl the Lightwave has the same type of inner. I’ve used it in snow and sub-zero and just add the extra layers to sleep in which I take for such eventualities. The disadvantage of a lined inner, is that condensation increases in certain conditions. During the night you release almost 2 pints of moisture, combined with the moisture generated by cooking within the tent possibly. You need a certain amount of ventilation to take this away, so its a fine balance between keeping warm and being damp!
Thanks. Great advice
Very interested in this shelter as I have been looking at the tarptent range in USA. Can you pitch it and pack it away with inner attached?
Yes if you so wish it can be packed as one.
Whats it like for a long person? I¨m 194 cm (~ 6 feet 4 inches?)
Is there room enough so you dont touch the walls with head or feet lying down straight on your back inside an sleeping bag?
Yes a tall person will be fine.
I am 6’2″ and have plenty of space at my head and feet. Certainly one if the best for internal space.
